We are thrilled to announce the winner of this year’s Molly Rose Scholarship. Huge congratulations to Amelia Richardson who at only 17 y/o really impressed the panel and shone through despite stiff competition! The Molly Rose 🌹 Scholarship is in memory of Sir David Marshall’s daughter, herself a great aviator during WWII, flying for the Air Transport Auxiliary. Sir David founded Marshall of Cambridge in 1909, and his son (Molly’s brother) later set up the aviation wing of Marshall and @cambridgeaeroclub where Amelia will now train.Inspired by Molly and intended to encourage young women into aviation, the initiative fully funds the Private Pilot’s Licence for one promising student each year. With her extensive gliding background and enthusiasm we can’t wait to get Amelia started on her PPL @cambridgeaeroclub !Describing the award as a huge honour, Richarson explained: “It really is a fantastic leap towards achieving my career aspirations as a flight instructor, a taste of which I’ve had since becoming a basic gliding instructor just over a year ago. Thank you to everyone for supporting me”.Christopher Walkinshaw DL, Director of External Relations and Communications at Marshall of Cambridge, concluded that “Amelia is clearly a passionate and talented young aviator who has already achieved a great deal,” extending the Marshall team’s enthusiasm in continuing to watch her career progress.Huge thanks to Aetheris Films and the Attagirls Club, Paul & Nadine Olaveson-Stabb, Graham, Gregory and Nigel Rose, The British Women Pilots Association (BWPA), Philip Meeson founder of Jet2 and of course Marshall of Cambridge, of which we are a part.@amelia_glider_pilot @mollyrosepilotscholarship @marshallgroupglobal @attagirlsclub @attagirlsthemovie @bwpa_uk @aetheris_uk #womeninaviation #learntofly #pilottraining #privatepilot ... British Women’s Pilot Association (BWPA) bursaries

Did you know about the multiple bursaries that the British Women’s Pilot Association (BWPA) offer to women pilots?

As we’re all unable to fly for the time being, why not check out these fantastic opportunities – you may well qualify for one, and could receive funding in time for our grand re-opening and the blue skies of summer!

Scholarships range from funding towards PPL training, to further qualifications (instructor’s rating, aerobatics rating…) to ATPL ground school programmes.

The deadline for applications is the 30th of April, and general requirements are BWPA membership (joining is easy), and being a woman(!). The bursaries are not restricted to UK citizens or residents.

The application process involves an online form detailing your motivation and evidence that you fit the requirements, and an interview. The emphasis throughout is on demonstrating that you’d use the bursary well; that you’d attain the qualification you’re aiming for, and that this would seriously benefit your flying future. To this end, mention flying hours, genuine interest in an aviation-filled future, extra-curriculars that demonstrate the skills they’re looking for, and anything else that makes you stand out. Feel free to send in CVs and application drafts for help with this!

British Women’s Pilot Association scholarships open for 2020 are as follows:

  • BWPA Flying Start
    • £1,000 for new, inexperienced pilots to gain their first qualifications
    • Requirements:
      • Carry out the scholarship flying in the UK
  • BWPA Flying High
    • £1,000 for licenced pilots who wish to gain further qualifications
    • Requirements:
      • Carry out the scholarship flying in the UK
      • At least a first qualification in flying (PPL or similar)
  • BWPA CATS CPL/ATPL
    • Full value of CATS Aviation Training, Luton groundschool CPL/ATPL (A or H) course
    • Requirements:
      • PPL(A) or (H)
      • Confirmation from an AME that you are capable or obtaining a Class 1 Medical
  • BWPA Bristol Groundschool ATPL
    • Half the value of the Bristol Groundschool ATPL (A or H) course
    • Requirements:
      • PPL(A) or (H)
      • Confirmation from an AME that you are capable or obtaining a Class 1 Medical
  • BWPA Wings Alliance
    • Full value of a Wings Alliance Airline Pilot Assessment (£295) – practice for airline assessments
    • Requirements:
      • Have the right to live and work in the EU or the UK
      • Know of no reason that they will not be able pass a criminal record check and so be able to hold an airport security pass
      • Be able to swim for at least 25m unaided
      • Know of no reason that they will not be able to pass a class 1 medical examination
      • Meet the minimum educational criteria (minimum of 5 passes at GCSE grade 4 or better, including English and Maths, or equivalent High School qualification)
      • Able to achieve ICAO Aviation English Language proficiency at level 4+
  • BWPA easyPPL Groundschool
    • Full value of an easyPPL groundschool course
    • Requirements:
      • Less than 10h total logged flying time at application
      • Not have attempted any of the CAA Theoretical Knowledge exams prior to application, and must be at least 16yo at time of application

Instrument training & the IR(R) this season

Are you planning on refreshing your flying skills this season?

The Cambridge Aero Club team of Instrument rated instructors are ready and waiting to guide you down the ILS to success!

The autumn and winter weather often brings poor visibility and layers of stratus and strato-cu cloud with good visibility on top, these are just the conditions in which an instrument qualification helps to keep you flying safely.

Cambridge Aero Club aircraft are ideally equipped for instrument training and our airport is ideal – with good lighting and excellent instrument approaches & ATC support, along with our team of dedicated Instructors and examiners that help to make flying “under the hood” a doddle!

Along with training pilots for the intital IR(R), (previously the IMC rating), and supporting through the groundschool element of the course, we are pleased to offer bespoke recurrency training for the renewal or revalidation of the full IR, and our newest course on offer, the CBIR – please ask a member of the team for details and a personal assessment to assist with scheduling and an action plan.

Our instrument training rates are inclusive of all ILS/NDB & GPS approaches here at Cambridge, when using our C172 fleet.

Both Ed and Alan have excellent availability throughout January and February.

For more information regarding all of our training courses can be found on our website, or by calling us on 01223 373717 or emailing us @ reception@cambridgeaeroclub.com

Coronavirus (COVID-19) Temporary closure

Coronavirus (Covid-19) announcement

Dear Aero Club members,

In response to the rapidly developing situation in the UK surrounding COVID-19, we regret to inform you that Cambridge Aero Club will be closing with immediate effect in order to safeguard members and staff. We are currently planning to reopen in early May but will review this in due course and keep you updated.

We understand this will be a disappointment for those of you who were hoping to fly in the upcoming weeks. However, it is our duty not to expose our members and staff to undue risk. The government currently advises that all forms of social contact should be avoided to contain the spread of COVID-19, and unfortunately social contact is an unavoidable consequence of what we do.

All Aero Club flights, both dual and solo, until 1 May have therefore been cancelled, and the Aero Club premises will be closed to visitors.

Those members with their own aircraft can gain access via the FBO ‘Jet Centre’ as the Cambridge Airport itself has not yet announced any closures.

Furthermore, the GASCo Safety Evening on 21 April has been postponed, as have the upcoming GroundSchoolclasses and the SkyBirdssocial evening.

We are working on expanding the amount of resources we can offer you so that you can keep learning without coming in.

The reception desk will be staffed periodically, unless and until this is precluded by government guidelines. The email inbox will be monitored constantly as staff are working from home and we would request that this be the preferred method of contact for any enquiries you may have.

Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to flying again.

Flying Training
Post Category: Membership

Introducing Aero: Ground School (PPL)

We are happy to offer our extended PPL Theory Program, Aero Ground School, with various options available to suit every learning  style.

Here at Cambridge Aero Club we understand that all students have differing needs and approaches to learning.

Whilst some are happy to prepare for their exams through self-study alone, others prefer to benefit from classroom-style instruction and  discussion with highly experienced flight instructors ahead of sitting their exams. In essence, this is why we run the Aero Ground School program through various formats, offering both one-to-one and group options covering all 9 subjects:

•Intensive program: 6 consecutive days £1190 (one to one £1490)
•Scheduled program: 6 Days scheduled over 2-3 months £1190 (one to one £1490)
•Clinic (one to one) £30.00 ph
•Exam only £252 (members) £287 (non members)

Meet the newest member of our fleet – C152 GPTTD!

Meet the newest member of our fleet – C152 GPTTD!

Fly our Cessna 152 for only £173.00 per hour dual rate!

The newest -and possibly ‘cutest’- member of our fleet, C152 G-PTTD (‘Tango Delta’) is available now for training flights!

The 2-seater cousin of our standard Cessna 172’s, and priced at only £173.00 per hour (dual rate) this offers a significant discount for our members.

Much like the Cessna 172, the Cessna 152 is widely viewed as an excellent trainer, particularly due to their honest, ‘no nonsense’ handling.

Powered by a 110-hp (82-kW) Lycoming O-235-L2C piston engine, Tango Delta is perfect for basic training, hour building, VFR navetc, this nifty little aircraft lends itself to both student pilots and PPL holders alike.

Trying to get to grips with those pesky landings? Want to save money or simply fancy something different? (whilst adding a new type to your logbook!)..

Then this is your aircraft!
