Want to hire our aircraft, but have less than 100 hours PIC? The New Horizons course is for you!
Designed for new PPL pilots to explore the world as a PIC. Once you’ve completed the course you will be signed off to hire our aircraft, and fly to any suitable UK airfield!
Course Objectives
The Cambridge Aero Club offers an exciting and challenging course. New Horizons enables recently qualified pilots to spread their wings while offering more established aviators a chance to revise and refresh their skills.
New Horizons consists of six dual land-aways, specifically chosen for their interest and varying degrees of complexity. Navigation methods are a mixture of GPS, Sky Demon, and traditional maps and plogs.
The aim of New Horizons is to build on a new pilot’s real-world experience. Navigating to and landing at unfamiliar airfields helps gain the confidence to take future solo trips and make the most of a newfound freedom.
Additionally, pilots who successfully complete the course will not be required to fly with an instructor to new destinations (apart from those airfields requiring the completion of an ‘Over Sea’ checkout).
Landaway destinations are grouped into three categories.
To complete the course, fly to three destinations from Group “A”, two from Group “B,” and one from Group “C.” Other destinations are also available by agreement.
The trip includes instruction in various navigational techniques and is approximately eight to 10 hours long, depending on the airfields chosen.
And what’s more, you will be building valuable PIC hours during the New Horizons course as your instructor acts as a safety pilot!
