“Like a Surgeon – Solo for the very first time”

Congratulations on your First Solo Dick White!

The first time for any student going solo is truly a momentous occasion and a huge achievement! Not least for Dick, who has worked tirelessly ‘like a surgeon’ to get to this point under the instruction of instructor Sarah Bond.

During his first solo in GHERC, Sarah kept an eagle eye on him from the vantage point of Cambridge ATC and was delighted to see a job well done! Dick said afterwards that the experience was both “Scary but very satisfying; rather like the first operation I performed!”

Piloting an aircraft is not Dick’s day job (as you might of guessed form the cheesy puns).. He works as a specialist small animal surgeon and is the founder and CEO of DWR Ltd in Six Mile Bottom, the largest private veterinary specialist centre in Europe. So he’s your man if your small animal is in need!

He decided to take up flying when he felt he “needed a different ‘hand-eye co-ordinated’ challenge to fill the huge void I discovered when I recently stopped operating to look after the business full time.”

When asked what he most gets out of flying Dick declares: “No phones! Complete focus!” and “Being able to master even these few basic flying skills is such a positive and affirming experience for someone of my age.”

Good work Dick – see you in the circuit!
